Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I have to have a strong science background?

A. It's not necessary. Everything you will need to know you'll learn during the training session. However, an interest in ecology and the environment as well as a strong desire to teach children in an outdoor setting is essential.

Q. What do I wear?

A. Clothes that will keep you warm and dry since you will be teaching outdoors most of the time. Nice looking, clean jeans and sweaters are appropriate.

Q. Is McKeever like a camp?

A. McKeever is an educational center, not a recreational camp. Activities involve discovery of concepts related to the environment and do not include things such as archery, swimming and canoeing.

Q. Do I have to stay at McKeever on the weekends?

A. Student teachers are responsible for teaching Monday through Friday. You are not required to spend your weekend on site.

Q. Who will I be working with?

A. You will be working with your cooperating teacher (one of the Environmental Educators), your university supervisor, student teachers from other universities and visiting interns from around the world.

Q. Is there a cost?

A. Housing, and 70% of your meals are provided at a nominal fee for 8 weeks. Student teachers must also purchase the training manual.

Q. Will I teach in the evening?

A. During the Earthkeepers and Sunship Earth programs, evening activities are part of the experience. However, student teachers will not teach more than an eight-hour day. These hours will not necessarily be consecutive throughout the day.

Q. Will I be living with elementary students?

A. No. Teachers and parents are responsible for the students at night. Student teachers live on site, although their housing is separate from the elementary students.
